Briggs Inc. was founded in 1955 by E.S. “Shirley” Briggs. Mr. Briggs began the company as a candy and tobacco wholesaler under the name “Briggs Tobacco & Specialty” selling to local accounts and delivering products with one delivery van. The company’s beginnings were very modest and the original warehouse was a makeshift bus depot which also housed a taxi cab company owned by Mr. Briggs.
In 1958 Mr. Briggs purchased a small building in downtown Corinth and moved his growing operation there. As the company continued to grow and expand into new lines of products the company’s need for a larger warehouse had again come to the forefront. In 1972 Mr. Briggs purchased a block of land on the newly developing Cass Street in Corinth and began construction of a new warehouse which opened in 1974.
In the early 1970s, Briggs actively began its journey into foodservice distribution and in 1978 joined Pocahontas Foods USA—one of the nation’s fastest-growing controlled label groups. In 2011 Pocahontas Foods became a part of Unipro Foodservice, the most prominent member-owned controlled label group in the nation. In June 2011 Briggs became a full member of Unipro Foodservice of which they are still a member today.
In January 1999 Briggs opened their first frozen distribution center adjacent to the dry facility on Cass Street in Corinth, greatly enhancing their ability to compete in the away-from-home food service market. In January 2014 Briggs expanded their frozen food distribution capabilities by opening a new state-of-the-art distribution center on South Tate Street in Corinth.
Today the Briggs Foodservice distribution business is owned and operated by the sons and grandsons of its founder, E.S. Briggs the company’s growth and expansion over the years has been made possible by hard work and dedicated employees set on serving their customers with quality products and excellent service.
